With over 140 non-bargaining staff and lawyers operating out of 18 offices, Legal Aid NL is one of the largest providers of legal services in the province, offering services to eligible individuals in the areas of family, criminal and some administrative law matters. Our vision is to ensure all people, regardless of means, capacity or social situation, have access to the knowledge and services they require to protect their basic legal rights.
We are searching for a Director of Human Resources (permanent) to join the senior management team in the head office based out of St. John’s. Reporting to the Provincial Director, the position will be responsible for providing leadership in the attainment of strategic objectives and promoting excellence in all facets of human resource management including recruitment and retention, employee relations, workforce development, and benefits management. Key job specific responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Establish and deliver on the strategic objectives and performance measures for the HR Division.
- Continuously improve the HR policy framework based on best practices.
- Track and analyze HR data and organizational trends and report on performance.
- Plan, lead, develop and implement strategies to improve staffing, recruitment, and retention.
- Lead initiatives to foster a respectful workplace culture within the organization.
- Oversee discipline and terminations matters, and conduct workplace investigations and dispute resolutions.
- Promote workforce development and learning.
- Plan, develop and monitor annual salary budgets.
- Improve HR information systems and processes relating to compensation and benefits management.
- Oversee administration of HR functions relating to compensation & benefits, employee records management, employee orientation & training, and occupational health and safety.
- Ensure compliance with HR policies, regulations, and laws.
Requirements
Screening Criteria:
- Bachelor’s degree or diploma in Human Resources or related field required; professional designation and Master’s degree preferred.
- At least eight years of progressive management experience in human resources, five of which must be in a supervisory or management role.
- Experience and expertise in dealing with complex employee relations issues.
- Experience and knowledge of HR policies and practices of Government of NL would be an asset.

- Thorough knowledge of labour regulations and laws.
Legal Aid NL offers an attractive compensation package that includes a competitive salary, comprehensive health and dental benefits, and a pension plan. This position offers a salary range of $96,046 to $124,860 (HL29).
